Commercial Security Camera Installation: Coverage, PoE, and NVRs

Useful footage beats a higher camera count. Cabling and storage decide whether the system still works in year three.

What is a commercial IP camera system?

A commercial IP camera system uses network cameras powered over Ethernet (PoE), recorded to a network video recorder (NVR) or equivalent storage, and viewed on-site or remotely. It is not a consumer kit with a few wireless cameras on a home router.

Coverage-first design vs count-first design

How Atkins Tech Solutions places cameras

Atkins Tech Solutions walks the property and places cameras for entries, POS or cash handling, parking, loading docks, and known blind spots. Exterior cameras need weather-rated housings and a PoE budget that survives winter loads on heated housings.

  • Entry and exit identification
  • POS / cash-handling coverage
  • Parking and perimeter
  • Docks and rear doors

PoE and cabling are the install

The camera is the visible part. The install is PoE switches or midspans, clean homeruns, and cable that can carry the power. Atkins Tech Solutions often specifies Cat6A for camera homeruns that will not be recabled later. See Cat6 vs Cat6A for the cable decision.

NVR retention is a storage math problem

Retention depends on camera count, resolution, compression, and motion. Atkins Tech Solutions sizes NVR storage from the owner's requirement during the quote — not a default 'about two weeks' that fails at the first incident.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras does a small restaurant need?
There is no honest universal number. Atkins Tech Solutions typically covers dining entries, register, kitchen or back door, and parking if the owner needs it. Count follows those jobs, not a package of eight.
Can I view cameras from my phone?
Yes. Atkins Tech Solutions configures secure remote viewing for owners, managers, and authorized staff on commercial IP systems.
Should cameras share the office Wi-Fi?
Atkins Tech Solutions prefers wired PoE cameras on a dedicated VLAN, not consumer Wi-Fi cameras on the guest network. Wireless is a last resort for locations you cannot cable.
Can cameras be installed with access control on one contract?
Yes. Atkins Tech Solutions often deploys cameras and door access together as one low-voltage scope for GCs and property managers.
Do you install analog DVR systems?
Most new Atkins Tech Solutions commercial jobs are IP/NVR. Analog upgrades are quoted when the owner is extending an existing plant rather than ripping it out on day one.
Who installs commercial cameras in Allentown or Stroudsburg?
Atkins Tech Solutions installs commercial IP camera systems in the Lehigh Valley, Pocono Mountains, NEPA, and Northern New Jersey, including work under general contractors.
