Commercial Fiber Optic Cabling & Installation

Premises fiber for backbone links, MDF-to-IDF runs, and building-to-building connections — planned, terminated, tested, and documented with the rest of the low-voltage scope.

Fiber is the backbone when copper distance, bandwidth, or electrical conditions are the wrong fit. Atkins Tech Solutions installs commercial fiber optic cabling for offices, warehouses, restaurants, retail, and construction projects across Eastern Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey.

Typical scopes are indoor and on-property links: MDF to IDF, floor-to-floor risers, suite-to-suite backbone, and building-to-building runs on the same campus. Fiber is planned with pathway, termination, testing, and closeout documentation — the same handoff standard used on copper structured cabling — so the owner's IT team or MSP can support it after we leave.

What is commercial fiber optic cabling?

Commercial fiber optic cabling is the glass backbone that connects telecom rooms, floors, and buildings when copper cannot carry the distance or bandwidth. Atkins Tech Solutions treats it as part of the structured cabling plant — pathway, termination, testing, and labels — not a specialty splice-truck service. What a commercial fiber install includes

A usable fiber link is more than a yellow jacket in a ceiling. Atkins Tech Solutions scopes the pathway, media, terminations, and testing so the owner's switches have a supportable uplink — not a mystery cable between closets.

Single-mode vs multimode

The correct fiber type depends on distance, the optics already in the rack, and how long the link needs to last. Atkins Tech Solutions recommends from those requirements rather than defaulting every job to the more expensive option.

  • Multimode is common for shorter indoor backbone runs between telecom rooms in the same building
  • Single-mode is the usual choice for longer distances, inter-building links, and uplinks that should still match future optics
  • Strand count is sized to the live need plus spare capacity the owner actually wants to pull once

Backbone, MDF/IDF, and building-to-building links

Most Atkins Tech Solutions fiber work sits in the backbone: connecting the main distribution frame to intermediate closets, tying floors together, or linking adjacent buildings on a commercial property. Copper still handles the horizontal drops to desks, cameras, and access points. Fiber carries the uplink those closets depend on.

  • New MDF/IDF build-outs where the copper plant needs a fiber uplink
  • Adding a closet or floor that is outside copper distance
  • Campus or building-to-building links where the pathway already exists or can be coordinated with the GC
  • Replacing failed or undocumented inter-closet links as part of closet remediation

New construction and retrofit

On commercial new construction and tenant improvements, fiber pathway has to be decided before ceilings close — the same timing as copper rough-in. Atkins Tech Solutions can include fiber in a commercial low-voltage contractor scope under a GC or electrical contractor, or contract it directly with the owner.

Existing buildings need a different look: available conduit, ceiling access, firestop, and whether the run can be completed without interrupting operations. Troubleshooting and repair of premises fiber ATS installed — or undocumented links found during closet work — are quoted from what is actually on site.

Testing, labeling, and handoff

Frequently asked questions

Do you install both single-mode and multimode fiber?

Yes. Atkins Tech Solutions selects single-mode or multimode from the distance, the owner's optics, and how long the link needs to remain useful. The recommendation is part of the quote, not a default to the more expensive media.

Is this the same as structured cabling?

Fiber is often part of a structured cabling plant, but this page is for searches that are specifically about fiber installation. For a complete copper-and-fiber building system, use commercial structured cabling. For Ethernet drops, PoE, and closet remediation, use network and data cabling.

Do you offer fusion splicing, OTDR certification, or aerial/OSP fiber?

Can fiber be included on a GC or electrical-contractor subcontract?
