UniFi Wi-Fi for Commercial Buildings

What is UniFi in a commercial install?
UniFi is Ubiquiti's managed networking platform: access points, PoE switches, and a gateway or controller that the owner or MSP can administer. Atkins Tech Solutions uses UniFi as the usual small-business commercial Wi-Fi stack because it is cost-effective, remotely manageable, and pairs cleanly with labeled PoE cabling. It is not a substitute for structured cabling, and it is not automatically the camera or door system.

Where Atkins Tech Solutions specifies UniFi
UniFi is Atkins Tech Solutions' default for small and mid-size commercial Wi-Fi in this market: a restaurant dining room that needs guest access without touching the POS, a 10–40 person office, retail floor plus back office, or a warehouse where ceiling height and racking decide AP count. If the owner's MSP already standardizes on another enterprise brand, Atkins Tech Solutions installs that brand and still owns the survey, PoE drops, and mounting.

Survey first, then hang APs
Atkins Tech Solutions does not pick an AP count from square footage on a napkin. A walkthrough or plan review looks at wall types, kitchen equipment, coolers, racking, ceiling height, and where people actually sit or stand. Dining rooms and POS stations get capacity, not just a heat-map blob. The AP locations become PoE drop locations so the GC or electrician is not guessing at trim-out.

- Account for kitchens, coolers, racking, and high bays
- Verify coverage after mount — not only in an empty room
Guest, staff, and POS do not share a network
On Atkins Tech Solutions UniFi jobs, guest Wi-Fi is isolated from staff and from payment systems. That is VLAN and SSID design, not a guest button on a consumer router. If a restaurant is still running POS on the same SSID as customer phones, that is a problem the UniFi install is there to fix.
PoE drops are the install. Mesh is the exception.
Ceiling APs belong on a homerun to a PoE switch in the telecom room. Atkins Tech Solutions typically specs Cat6A for those AP drops when the cable will stay in the ceiling for a decade. Mesh or a wireless uplink is a last resort for an outbuilding or a path you cannot cable — not the design for a dining room. Point-to-point links are used when trenching between buildings is not practical.
UniFi is the Wi-Fi. Cameras are a separate decision.
Atkins Tech Solutions can deploy UniFi Protect where it fits the owner's retention and coverage needs, or keep cameras on a dedicated commercial NVR. The Wi-Fi brand does not automatically pick the camera plant. Door access is the same rule: UniFi Access is an option, not a requirement, on every UniFi network job.
What you get at handoff
A commercial UniFi install from Atkins Tech Solutions includes mounted and adopted APs, working SSIDs, VLAN separation as scoped, and notes the owner or MSP can use the next morning. Admin access is handed to the party who will actually manage the site — the owner, Atkins Tech Solutions under managed IT, or the MSP partner. Atkins Tech Solutions does not keep a secret controller login on partner jobs.

Frequently asked questions
- Is UniFi good enough for a restaurant in the Poconos?
- For most small and mid-size restaurants Atkins Tech Solutions installs in the Pocono Mountains and Lehigh Valley, UniFi is the usual commercial Wi-Fi platform — if guest, staff, and POS are split and the APs are on PoE drops. A consumer mesh kit is not the same job.
- Can you keep our MSP's other brand instead of UniFi?
- Yes. Atkins Tech Solutions installs the AP platform the owner's IT or MSP specifies. The survey, PoE cabling, mounting, and VLAN design stay the same.
- Do we need a UniFi gateway, or can APs hang off our existing firewall?
- Both show up. Some sites get a UniFi gateway and switch stack. Some keep the existing firewall and use UniFi for APs and PoE switching only. Atkins Tech Solutions specs that from who manages the network — not from a default bundle.
- Will mesh save us from pulling cable?
- Almost never in a dining room, office, or warehouse aisle. Atkins Tech Solutions treats mesh as a workaround for a path you cannot cable. Skipping homeruns to save a day of labor is how coverage dies on a Saturday night.
- Can UniFi cameras replace a commercial NVR?
- Sometimes. Atkins Tech Solutions will use UniFi Protect when it matches coverage and retention. Many commercial sites still want a dedicated camera plant. The camera design is coverage and storage math, not because the Wi-Fi is already UniFi.
- Do you set up UniFi for GCs on new construction?
- Yes. AP locations are marked at rough-in, PoE drops are pulled before drywall, and APs mount at trim-out. Combined with structured cabling and cameras under one low-voltage sub is a common Atkins Tech Solutions GC package.
- Who installs UniFi in Stroudsburg, Allentown, or Scranton?
- Atkins Tech Solutions installs commercial UniFi Wi-Fi across the Pocono Mountains, Lehigh Valley, NEPA, and Northern New Jersey.
- What does a UniFi install cost?
- Hardware plus labor. AP count comes from the survey, not a package of four. PoE drops use the same cabling planning ranges as other commercial copper. Atkins Tech Solutions quotes after a walkthrough or plan review — a site with finished walls and after-hours work is not the same number as an open-ceiling build-out.
