Wireless Site Surveys & Wi-Fi Heat Mapping

Measured coverage and capacity surveys — so access point counts come from data instead of square footage.

Most bad commercial Wi-Fi was designed by dividing square footage by a number. A survey replaces that guess with measurement: where coverage actually reaches, how many devices a space has to carry, what the building materials do to signal, and exactly where each access point and drop belongs. We survey before design, validate during, and verify after the install.

What is a wireless site survey?

A wireless site survey measures radio coverage and capacity in a building to determine how many access points are needed, where they mount, and how channels and power should be set. A predictive survey models this from drawings before construction; a validation survey measures actual signal on site; a verification survey confirms real-world performance after installation. Square footage alone cannot produce any of those answers.

Retrofits into finished space cost the most when a drop was missed. Surveying first is the cheaper end of that trade.

Three kinds of survey, and when each one matters

Which survey you need depends on where the project is. Most jobs use one; a large or difficult building uses all three.

  • Predictive design — modeled from drawings during design or pre-construction, before cable is pulled
  • Validation survey — measured on site in the actual building, walls and finishes included
  • Post-install verification — confirms real coverage and roaming after access points are mounted
  • Troubleshooting survey — measures an existing network that is already underperforming

Coverage and capacity are two different problems

A building can have a signal everywhere and still have Wi-Fi that fails. Coverage is whether the radio reaches; capacity is whether it can carry the number of devices in the room. A full dining room, a training room, or a warehouse at shift change are capacity problems, and no amount of signal strength fixes them. We survey for both and size the access point count to the busier of the two.

  • Coverage: signal reach, overlap for roaming, edge-of-cell performance
  • Capacity: device count per room at the busiest hour, not the average
  • Dense spaces: dining rooms, conference and training rooms, waiting areas
  • Roaming: enough overlap that handhelds and phones hand off cleanly

Buildings that need a survey most

Some spaces punish a guessed design harder than others. If your building is on this list, the survey pays for itself the first time you avoid an extra drop through finished drywall.

  • Warehouses and high-bay spaces where ceiling height and racking drive AP count
  • Cold storage, freezers, and metal-heavy industrial areas
  • Restaurants with kitchens, coolers, and a full dining room at peak
  • Older buildings with plaster, masonry, or foil-backed insulation
  • Multi-tenant offices sharing spectrum with neighbors
  • Anywhere handheld scanners or VoIP phones have to roam without dropping

Interference and channel planning

Half of commercial Wi-Fi complaints are interference, not coverage. Neighboring tenants, existing equipment, and badly configured access points all fight for the same channels. A survey looks at what else is in the air before setting channel and power, and it's the reason two identical buildings can need different configurations.

Do you have the equipment to perform wireless site surveys?

Can you survey a building that hasn't been built yet?
Yes. A predictive survey models coverage from drawings during design or pre-construction so PoE drops land in the right place at rough-in. Atkins Tech Solutions then validates coverage on site once walls and finishes are in.
Our Wi-Fi already works badly — can a survey tell us why?
That's one of the most common reasons to run one. A troubleshooting survey measures actual coverage, capacity, and interference on the existing network and identifies whether the problem is access point placement, count, configuration, channel conflict, or cabling.
What's the difference between coverage and capacity?
Coverage is whether the signal reaches; capacity is whether the network can carry the devices in the room. A dining room or training room at full occupancy is a capacity problem, and adding signal strength does not fix it. Atkins Tech Solutions sizes the design to whichever is more demanding.
Do you survey warehouses and high-ceiling spaces?
Yes, and they need it most. Ceiling height, racking layout, stored material, and metal all change access point count and placement — a warehouse surveyed empty is not the same building once it's full.
Can we white-label the survey for our client?
Yes. The documentation is written for an end client to read and can be delivered under your project name, priced for markup or pass-through billing through your PSA.
Do we have to buy the installation from you?
No. The survey deliverable is complete enough to bid elsewhere. Atkins Tech Solutions would like to quote the cabling and install, but a survey is not a contract to do the work.
