Wireless Site Surveys Explained
What a survey actually measures, which type you need, and how to tell a real deliverable from a screenshot of a heat map.

What is a wireless site survey?
A wireless site survey is the measurement step that turns a floor plan into a Wi-Fi design. It establishes how far signal actually travels through the building's real walls, how many devices each area has to carry at its busiest, what else is competing for the same channels, and therefore how many access points are needed and where they mount. Without it, access point count is an estimate derived from square footage.

Most projects use one. Warehouses, hospitals-style layouts, and buildings with a history of Wi-Fi complaints are worth two or three.
Why square footage math fails
The most common way commercial Wi-Fi gets designed is to divide the building's square footage by a number from a vendor datasheet. That works in an empty box with drywall partitions. It fails the moment the building has masonry, plaster, foil-backed insulation, coolers, freezers, racking to the ceiling, or a room that fills with sixty people twice a day. Those are the buildings where someone ends up paying twice — once for the original install and again for the drops that were missed.

Coverage and capacity are separate problems
Coverage is whether the signal reaches a location. Capacity is whether the network can carry the number of devices in that location at its busiest moment. They are measured differently and solved differently, and confusing them is why some buildings have full signal bars and unusable Wi-Fi. A conference room with strong signal and one access point serving forty laptops is a capacity failure, and turning up transmit power makes it worse rather than better.

- More power is not more capacity — it usually adds interference
What a real deliverable contains
A survey you can build from is a document, not a screenshot. If what you receive is a single colored floor plan with no access point locations and no drop schedule, it isn't finished — the cabling crew still has to guess, which was the problem the survey was supposed to solve.

When it's worth paying for
A survey is not mandatory on every job, and any contractor telling you it is should be questioned. A dozen drops in an open-ceiling office with a simple layout does not need one. The cost is justified when the building is difficult, when the design is not obvious, or when somebody is about to commit real money to an assumption.

Questions to ask whoever is surveying your building
Survey quality varies enormously, and the word gets used for everything from a proper measured walk to five minutes with a phone app. These questions separate them quickly.
- Which type are you running — predictive, validation, or verification?
- Will I get access point locations and a drop schedule, or only heat maps?
- How are you accounting for the room at its busiest, not empty?
- Are you surveying the bands we'll actually deploy?
- Will you verify coverage after installation, and is that included?
- If I don't buy the install from you, is the documentation still mine?

Frequently asked questions
- Can a wireless survey be done from drawings alone?
- A predictive survey can, and it's the right tool during design and pre-construction so PoE drops land correctly at rough-in. It relies on assumptions about wall materials, so on difficult or older buildings it should be validated on site once finishes are in.
- Is a phone app good enough for a site survey?
- For a rough sanity check on an existing network, an app can show you signal strength. It cannot produce a defensible access point count, mounting locations, a drop schedule, or a channel plan for a commercial design, and it does not measure capacity.
- How long does a survey take?
- A small office is often a single visit; a large warehouse or multi-floor building takes longer, and validation plus verification means more than one trip. Atkins Tech Solutions states the visit count in the quote rather than discovering it midway through.
- Do we need a new survey if we're just adding access points?
- Often a partial one. Adding capacity to a specific area changes channel planning for its neighbors, so measuring that area and what it touches is usually worthwhile before adding hardware that may increase interference.
