Commercial Network Closet & Rack Remediation
Audit and remediate commercial MDFs and IDFs while protecting the systems that still need to remain online.
Years of additions can turn an MDF or IDF into a troubleshooting problem: unlabeled cabling, unknown patching, abandoned equipment, failed terminations, oversized patch cords, crowded racks, and no documentation.
Atkins Tech Solutions audits and remediates commercial network closets while protecting the systems that still need to remain online.
The goal is not to make the rack photograph well. The goal is to make the infrastructure supportable.

What's included
- Audit before touching production
- Salvage what should stay
- Labeling and documentation
- Staged work on active networks
Problems we inherit
Commercial closets accumulate work from multiple vendors over time.
- unlabeled patch panels
- mystery cables
- switches added wherever there was space
- abandoned patch cords
- poor cable management
- damaged terminations
- no port map
- no room for expansion
- multiple vendors' work layered over time
- active systems that cannot simply be shut down
Audit before touching production
Before a remediation scope is finalized, ATS reviews rack and wall condition, switches and patch panels, current patching, labels, active dependencies where they can be identified, rack capacity, pathway entry, power/UPS conditions, and what the customer actually wants to preserve. A closet cleanup that creates an outage is not a successful cleanup.
Salvage what should stay
Not every messy rack needs full replacement.
- preserve serviceable cabling
- re-terminate problem runs
- replace damaged jacks or panels
- standardize patching
- reorganize equipment
- add cable management
- label existing plant
- relocate equipment
- create space for expansion
- remove abandoned material only after it is identified as abandoned
Labeling and documentation
A remediation project should leave the IT team with more knowledge than it had before. Deliverables can include port IDs, cable labels, rack photos, patching notes, device/location notes, test results where part of scope, and as-built / closeout notes.
Active-network remediation
Some closets support operations that cannot tolerate a long outage. ATS can plan remediation in controlled stages so changes are made with a known sequence rather than ripping out everything at once.
New racks and expansions
ATS also builds and expands commercial racks for tenant improvements, office moves, warehouse expansions, camera/AP deployments, access-control network infrastructure, switch/UPS changes, and multi-site standards.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Can you clean up a closet that has to stay online?
Yes. Atkins Tech Solutions starts with an audit of what is live, then remediates in controlled stages so cleanup does not become an outage.
- Do you always replace the cabling?
No. Salvage versus replace is decided from the audit. Some plants need new homeruns; some need re-termination, labels, and a supportable rack.
